Senior Finance Director

Job Description:

Position Summary

Responsible to provide strategic financial leadership to ensure the organization’s long-term financial sustainability, regulatory compliance, effective risk management, and alignment with the organization’s strategic goals. The role oversees the accounting and treasury function and ensures adequate cash flow management and investment policy.

Responsibilities

  • Provide clear and decisive leadership by identifying trends, analyzing performance, and assessing risks and opportunities within the organization’s operational context
  • Set the (financial) strategic direction in collaboration with the Finance Director and the Executive Team integrating programmatic and operational needs
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of strategic interventions, adjusting priorities and resources as needed to respond to changing contexts
  • Delegate day-to-day responsibilities to the Head of Accountancy and Treasury, Finance Director, and Country Offices to ensure an optimal division of tasks and decision-making authority
  • Lead and oversee the development, review and updating of Financial Manuals, Grant Manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs), templates and formats
  • Promote organization-wide awareness and understanding of financial and grant policies through training, onboarding, and regular communication
  • Establish and maintain a clear delegation of authority framework that is appropriate for the organization’s context and ensure a proper balance between delegation versus internal control
  • Design and oversee the organization’s risk management framework, ensuring proactive identification and mitigation of risks, ensuring alignment with operational realities
  • Ensure the organization complies with all donor requirements and local regulatory obligations
  • Lead and coordinate internal audits and organisation level audits, ensuring timely responses and implementation of recommendations
  • Monitor changes in regulatory environments and donor expectations to proactively adjust compliance strategies
  • Provide technical support to Country Offices for the preparation of donor-specific budgets, ensuring alignment with donor requirements and internal policies
  • Monitor and forecast cash flow across all country offices to ensure liquidity and operational continuity
  • Ensure appropriate banking relationships are maintained, including oversight of account structures and signatory protocols
  • Oversee foreign exchange management to mitigate currency risks and optimize conversions
  • Review and approve treasury reports, reconciliations, and financial dashboards for executive decision-making
  • Conduct periodic treasury audits and risk assessments to strengthen internal controls and compliance
  • Review and identify system and process improvement opportunities through utilization of digital tools
  • Act as the lead liaison with the organization’s ICT Hub to drive digital transformation initiatives
  • Design and lead other short term projects to optimise finance and grants management
  • Provide strong leadership and coaching to direct reports and functional reports to maximize team performance and professional growth
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture through team-building initiatives, proactive conflict resolution, and leading by example
  • Conduct regular team check-ins and facilitate annual team retreats to strengthen cohesion and alignment
  • Cultivate and manage strong relationships between HQ and Country Offices to ensure effective communication and coordination
  • Build and maintain a strategic network of key stakeholders, including donors, peer INGOs, and other relevant partners
  • Participate in donor negotiations and represent the organization in high-level external engagements

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Masters degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • CPA, Chartered Accountant, or equivalent qualification strongly preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive financial management experience, with at least 5 years in a supervisory or leadership role
  • Extensive experience in nonprofit, multi-country operation, and international organization required
  • Experience with donor compliance and risk management required
  • Strong command in English
  • Strong technical accounting and data validation skills
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and team/people management abilities
  • High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Proficiency in Sun or similar accounting/ERP systems
  • Strong understanding of internal controls, compliance, and audit readiness
  • Demonstrated commitment to organizational transparency and accountability
